MY PUPPY FIRST DAY AT HOME
Just a few little tips to make your and your puppy transition easier.
What your puppy is use to : Your pup is already started on paper training, meaning that he is already used to doing his business on paper.
Your puppy is used to sleeping all night without having someone to go see what he wants every time he whines. Here when it is time for them to go to bed I turn their light out, wish them all good night unless THERE IS AN EMENGENCY.
[ Puppy crying because he is lonely is not considered an emergency at my house ] The puppies do not see me until morning .
Yes, your puppy will most likely whine the first couple of nights. He will most likely wake up during the night and cry because he is lonely. PLEASE BE KIND TO YOURSELF AND YOUR PUPPY. Do not go to him every time he cries .
You will not be doing either of you a favorand within a couple of nights your puppy will get used to sleeping through the night. (some puppies may take up to a week)
I believe that all puppies should have access to dry food and water 24 hours a day. Your puppy will not have a tendancy to over eat if the food is always available .
Small breed puppies especially example chihuahua NEED to eat every few hours or they may go hypoglycemic [ hypoglycemia is the medical term for a pathologic state produced by a lower than normal level of blood glucose.]
Tips : It does help if you give your new puppy a big soft stuffed toy to snuggle with. Remember he is used to snuggling with mom or his brothers and sister. Radio at a low level also helps.
Do not use a hot water bottle to keep your puppy warm . As much as a hot water bottle will warm your puppy the first few hours it will also draw the heat out of your puppy when it is cooling off. For small breed puppies a proper doggie heat pad
Your puppy is used to living in a pen either 4x4 or 8x8 depending on the breed and number of pups. Puppy play pen also called xpen can be bought at pet stores. I am not crazy of the idea of a puppy being stuck in a small crate for 6 to 8 hours.
But i do strongly believe in xpens every small breed dog owner should have one .They can be set up in seconds can be easily moved from one room to the otherand they do give your puppy enough space to play.
Inside your expen you should have:
Beside his bed you should have food and water.On the other side you can have a few toys or chewies .Here i usually hang a stuffed toy above their pen . This serves 2 purposes first your toys do not end in you know what or his water.
Second a hanging toy is a mobile toy and puppies love it .!!
